If you are at least 13 years old, would like to help out the local soccer community, and interested in earning some extra money, become a youth soccer referee! We have competitive level games throughout the year and recreational level games during the fall season.

If you are interested in becoming a referee for LYSC and would like to be notified of upcoming local training sessions, please complete the LYSC Referee Interest Form.

In order to referee, you must complete a training program, which consists of an self-paced online course and a 3 hour field session. More information about the training can be found at our Referee Training web page.

Once you obtain your license, we will start you out with younger recreational matches to help get you started. As you gain confidence and experience we will move you up to older age groups and/or competitive matches with mentoring provided by more experienced referees. After a season or two, you will be ready to take the whistle as a Center Referee and earn the extra money that comes along with the additional responsibilities.

Please contact our referee coordinator with any questions.

In order to become a licensed referee, you must be at least 13 years of age at the time of taking the course. A general background in soccer is also recommended, but not required. The entry level referee training course consists of an online course that takes approximately 6 hours to complete, followed up by a 3 hour field training session. The cost for the training program is $75.

Once your training is complete, you will be connected with our Referee Assignor so you can start refereeing soccer matches.  Entry level referees will generally start out refereeing younger players in recreational level soccer matches. As you gain confidence and experience, you will move up to matches played by older players and competitive soccer matches. The payments for each game refereed increase as you move up to higher level matches.

1) Sign Up for a new account at the US Soccer Learning Center.

2) Complete the Background Check (only required if 18 years or older). The background check can take up to five days to process and MUST be  completed before taking the course. The background check needs to be completed every other year. Any existing background checks you might already have from other organizations do not qualify.

1) From the US Soccer Learning Center, select “Courses” on the top navigation bar.

2) In the menu on the left side of the screen select: Grassroots-First Time Referees. Click “Go to course List” and select the date/location that works best for your Field Session. Loomis and Granite Bay will host at least one field session each season, typically sometime in June or July. You can also attend field sessions at any other location if you find something that is more convenient.

3) Complete the online training and test requirements. All Learning Center requirements MUST be completed at least 24 hours before the field session.

4) Attend the field session you selected.  Your Badge will be given to you upon completion of the field session.

Once you have completed the course, please notify our Referee Assignor for further instructions.
